Retell/Summarize a section of a text

Use the Circular List and Dissected Web to collect related details and summarize them in a 1-3 word label.

Apply the same process with annotation. Highlight relevant details (i.e., green) and note why they’re important (i.e., whylighting).

Practice summarizing individual sections using science and social studies textbooks by removing the subheads before reading aloud.

Paraphrase an author’s ideas.

Summarize the whole text

YOUNGER READERS: Use the 1-3 word labels or mini-retellings from each section to generate the multi-sentence summary. Combine those words and phrases to create a couple sentences that retell what the whole text was about.

Stretch section labels into a summary paragraph.

Transfer section labels in order. Stretch them into written or oral sentences to create a whole-text retell.
(Make another copy of the second page if the text has more than four sections/labels.)

OLDER READERS: Use the 1-3 word labels or mini-retellings from each section to generate the multi-sentence summary. Simply stretch each into a sentence and stack the sentences to follow the order of the original passage.
